The O-I : EXPRESSIONS team has received a record number of entries for its 2023 student design competition. The global competition is run in association with Pentawards and the winning student will receive a valuable mentorship with spirits giant Diageo. The shortlist will be announced in ???.

The O-I : EXPRESSIONS STUDENT DESIGN AWARD challenged students to create a beautiful graphical design for a low- or non-alcoholic spirits brand, a sector which is growing 7% year on year. Students used O-I : EXPRESSIONS, O-I’s innovative direct to glass printing technology, to create a design that stands out in a crowded market. Entrants chose their base container shape from O-I’s contemporary collection, a sustainable premium range of spirits bottles.

Theis year’s judges are:

  • Steve Honour, Design Leader, Innovation and Futures at Diageo
  • Melianthe Leeman, Global Marketing Director, Wines and Spirits, O-I

Five shortlisted designs will be made by the O-I : EXPRESSIONS team and displayed at Packaging Innovations London (September 2023). The overall winner will be announced at the Pentawards Gala Ceremony on 23 September and will win a Pentawards trophy, a mentorship opportunity at Diageo (either in -person on online depending on the student’s location), a sample of their bottle, and a feature in the next Pentawards Design Book.

“To be involved in supporting talent in this way is a pleasure. It’s nice to be able give back and share my knowledge with students that could soon shape the future. I hope they approach the brief by placing sustainability at the core while still delivering beauty to delight the consumer. And, of course, push boundaries and challenge conventions as that is at the core of design as a whole.”
— Steve Honour, Design Leader, Innovation and Futures at Diageo
